A disenchanted artist meets the girlfriend (Emmanuelle Beart) of a photographer through a mutual art dealer friend. The photographer and art dealer persuade the artist to continue his final masterpiece "La Belle Noiseuse" (The Beautiful Troublemaker) using EB as the model (previously he used his now ageing wife). EB is cross not to have been consulted but goes anyway. The photographer becomes jealous as the days go by as does the artists wife. The artist however believes that the masterpiece can only come out of suffering and as such puts both himself and his model (EB) through hell to achieve it, the jealousy of the other two only effecting the masterpiece towards the end. This is an in depth study of one nude painting's creation, and of those that contribute to its creation.
