The story starts with the chance meeting of Beart and Auteuil. They marry, only to be separated from each other by war. Beart is unfaithful to her husband and lover whom she meets when they are posted to Germany. Her children are of doubtful legitimacy and her love for them, her husband and her lover is constantly questioned as the military lifestyle of her husband constantly moves her from country to country as well as separating them. This is the story of three people thrown together by chance, held together by love and lust and ripped apart by war and jealousy.
